As much as I’m proud to have been raised as an army kid, it had some downsides too. My father got transferred every few years and thus changed my city, school and friends. I am an introvert by nature and have always hesitated to approach new people. However, it is easier to bond with new people over sports. So, with football by my side, I never fell short of good company.

Coming back to the army style of upbringing, my father was very strict - especially about studies. He wanted me to become a doctor. I wasn't a particularly bright kid though when it came to academics. Football was my first love. I had carved out a comfortable space for myself wherein I went out to play when dad wasn’t around, took only my mother for school’s PTA meetings that rained complaints from teachers about me paying less attention towards academics and studied well enough to pass.

This arrangement didn’t last long though. During 10th class, I got selected for nationals in football. Predictably so, father outrightly rejected my proposal of going for the tournament as that was a crucial year with Board Exams right around the corner. Mother helped me convince him. The entire episode acted as a major icebreaker between me and my father. He never stopped me for sports after that.
