Having played First Division cricket for more than 15 years in West Bengal, the game has become second skin to me. A couple of years back, I got posted in a school as a cricket coach. As much as I was looking forward to this stint, I was concerned about the fact that the school did not have a cricket team. As I dug deeper, I could sense a waning interest in cricket. When I opened up registrations, only 3 boys expressed their interest in the game. All the rest were flocking towards football and basketball.

There onwards, it was an uphill battle, but today, I proudly say that I’m coaching a very talented team of players. In such a short span of time, 2 students from the school were selected to be a part of the West Bengal team to compete at the National Games 2016 organised by the ASISC while I was selected as the head coach for the state team. We went to Mumbai for the Nationals and bagged the 5th position.

The superlative performance of the Indian Cricket Team has also had a positive impact on the students’ outlook towards the game. The boys have started to practice everyday now. Girls, who were reluctant earlier, have also started to play under the influence of strong role models in front of them like Mithali Raj. We don’t have a girls’ cricket team yet, but we should be able to get there within a year or so.
